If you can realize why you are depressed is part of how you get over it. Addressing it is the next step.
Good nutrition and exercise is part of good mental health too.
Going for walks helped me a lot!
There are over the counter "meds' that can help you too if you don't want to seek psychiatric assistance.
Check into St. Johns Wart to start.

I have to take meds, because I'm bipolar, but here are all the non meds things I do (yeah, really!!!)

Use a light box every morning(look up seasonal affective disorder-way common in the North)

Go to counseling (cognitive-behavioral type)

Increase your social support (talk to friends & family more, join a club, do more nice stuff with your significant other)

Exercise some every day

Figure out what your "issues" are (baggage) and figure out how to deal with them

Get "toxic people" out of your life as much as possible (people who regularly cut you down, sabotage you)

If it's a temporary "depression" like you just broke up with someone, or someone died, or you got fired from a job, time will take care of that. That isn't really depression, that is grief. Grief can turn into depression, but it isn't the same thing.

If none of that stuff does enough, you will probably have to take meds. That doesn't mean you have to take them permanently, a lot of people get better and don't need them anymore.

If its just a depression (LOW ) of a few days you will overcome it~~. If you have a deep depression (like I had ) that will not go away and just gets worse then you need help. I finally found a good psychiatrist that immediately seen my need for anti depressants. We tried a few before we found the one that worked for me. I was in therapy for a long time and that Dr. SAVED MY LIFE. I am so at peace and happy today. I found that I had probally been depressed most of my life and when my precious Mother spent 8 horrible months dying my depression peaked. We were so close.
Depression is no fun.
Work hard at being cheerful, thinking positive, counting your blessings & etc.
I wish you a wonderful New Year~~Smile, Its Contagious ~~

I'm able to over come depression for a few months, then it hits me again.

It's all about positive thinking. There are negative things surrounding us everyday, they seem to stand out more than the positive. You have to learn to look beyond all the madness and negative in life, and find the positive.

I think life is all about choices. You can choose to let the depression take control over your life or you can choose to put a stop to it and be in control.

Sadly, I'm not able to do this anymore.

I'm finally seeing two counselors and a psychiatrist. It seems to be helping a bit.

Try counseling.

What I did was open my eyes to the problems of the rest of the world, and realize how lucky I was that I was not suffering the majority of those problems! Every time I begin to think about my crappy car, I see a family of 6 waiting for the bus with 15 bags of groceries in the rain. Or, when I think about the fact that I don't have high-speed, I remember that there are people that don't even have dial-up, much less a computer...etc.

IT COULD BE MUCH WORSE!!!!

Get very physical demanding work so that when the time is ended you are too tired to do anything, physical or mental. After 5/6 months of this--depression will not be part of you.
