Spend some time messing with her feet, say five minutes each day for a week, or more if need be. Each time she is good about it, give her a small treat, about the size of a raisin. If she struggles, just say oops, and go to the next foot. She will soon learn that having her feet messed with is a good thing. When you can handle her feet easily, do the same thing, but with the clipper in your hand. Rub it on her feet, on her nails, anywhere so she will learn that it's nothing to fear. When you and she both are comfortable with all this, then proceed to clipping. Only cut a very small amount off the tip the first several times, and be generous with the treats. By this time you should not need tranquilizers. My Rottie cross was only 110 lbs, he had very hard black nails, and his feet were very ticklish, but because I started when he was young, I never had a problem.

If a dog is anxious enough, a tranquilizer may not even work. Sometimes adrenaline just overcomes good intentions. Have a strong friend lie on her and hold her tight. Clip the nails avoiding the quick which will cause bleeding. It looks like the pink strip in the white nails. After one paw, praise her and give her a treat then take on the next paw. Petsmart does it for 8 bucks where I live. Train your dog to look forward to a clipping. Pretend to use the nail clippers on her and give her a treat for good behaviour every day for a week. Good luck and get the job done.

Do not administer a tranquilizer to your dog without vet assistance/guidence! A miscalculation and you have a dead dog on your hands.

This sounds like a two person job. Have another family member, someone she's familiar with, hold her by the collar and reassure her as you perform the procedure. (If she's trained to lay down, this position would provide the easiest access to her feet.) You can even give her small treats, or pieces of cheese (my dogs love cheese) during the process and this will help to distract her from what your doing to her feet. As long as you;re careful and don't clip into the quik, this will be a fast, painless procedure.

And the best part - no tranquilizer required.

The only sedative that I would recommend without a perscription is benadryl. Anything else you should purchase from a vet. But benadryl could work just as well. The dosage is 2-4mg/kg for dogs.. meaning your dog can handle as many as 2 benadryl tabs. I would start with one to make sure 2 wont knock her out, if one does nothing, give her a second to calm her down and try clipping. If you cant then take her to the vet.. they have alot of hands to help, they can put a muzzle on her if need be, and they only charge about 8 bucks!

The vet is inexpensive and easy. Since she's a rottie she should be large, easy to roll over, and loves a belly rubbing. Doing that will relax her and put her in an easy position to clip. You might even try filing them.

Did you know rotties have 300lbs of pressure to their bite, that's the most of any k9 including hyennas, also half that of a shark.

A dog's nails need to be trimed! You can end up with foot problems. If you take her on walks, 30 min or so a day on the pavement, this will help keep them trim. If you do not know how to trim them, see your vet. They can instruct you on how to cut them and also determine if medication may be an option. Medication should be a last resort. You need to work with your dog more. You should be able to touch your dog anywhere you wish. You may want to consult a professional handler for your own education.

I would definetly take your Rottie to the vet. It's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, you don't want to give her a tranquilizer---the vet can do it with no problem and it's not expensive at all. Good luck--hope this helps :)

i had a bull mastiff . when he was a baby i touched his nails and feet alot so it would not seen like an all of a sudden thing. then when i started to cut his nails i had built up trust that i wasn't going to hurt him. then after i did his nails i would give him a treat and praised him up for it . if you end up each time giving her a treat she will learn if shes good she gets a treat. at first it is scarry for them, the more times you do it, the more they get used to it,also they know they can trust you and it just becomes part of life to them.pets are very much like kids at heart. if you have to have someone to help in holding her so she can't move alot, that would be the best for starting out,but make sure after she gets a treat, you'll see ,after awhile she will do better. but whatever you do touch that area for at least a week before attempting, this will make her feel safier with anything you do carewise. i hope this helps you. oh if you are going to brush her teeth try rubing her gums with your finger the same amount of time. they actually have finger brushes at the vets.

You'll need to take her to the vet to be given a sedative. They will clip them for you also. In the future, if you mess with her feet, poking and touching them, she wil get used to it and not be so edgy about the clipping of the nail. It's best to start clipping early when they are pups, that way the quick wil grow to a normal length.

If you don't feel comfortable clipping the Rottweiler's toenails and if the dog is good and calm around people, go to PetsMart and get it clipped for $8.
