'Vertical' and 'horizontal' cities.
'Vertical' are high-density cities with defined center, cultural attractions, jobs, markets, and residential neighborhoods easily accessible by foot, bike, or public ground and underground transit.
The 'horizontal' type cities have lower density, a poorly or undefined center, separate centers of business and residential life, and is generally only accessible by car.

New York City and Los Angeles.

New York City is an high density commercial and urban center relying on a wide range of transportation means, including pedestrian, while Los Angeles is a low density urban sprawl with scattered commercial centers relying almost solely on automotive traffic.

Each is an archetype of the extremes of the spectrum of cities in urban planning.
