1 set goals
2 set a regular time to read.
3 have available: a modern translation, 1611 King James Bible and a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance.

Read a comfortable amount of chapters each day, and meditate on the words/reflect.
Then use the 1611 JV and Strong's to look up the words and definitions in the original language.
Looking up the original definitions is so enlightening, as the original languages were more descriptive and precise.

After doing this for some time, you may find it helpful to pick up the book "Religions in America" by Leo Rosten.
You will find it amazing to compare what you are reading in the Bible, as to what the churches in America teach as doctrine.

Best to study from with FEWEST DIFFICULT WORDS is the KJV. It also EXPLAINS ITSELF if and when read SLOWLY and carefully. Only 35 new words to learn. The English is SUPERB!

Find a QUIET PLACE.
PRAY to THE GOD/Jesus for HIS Inspiration.
Start at Gen.1:1 and read the side notes as you study.

If you only study a paragraph or two at a sitting -that is OK.!
It is a LIBRARY that is good for a LIFETIME!.

STOP and think about what you read every 10 minutes or so-let it sink in!

If you haven't read it before starting from Matthew- Revelations is best. Then get a translation version that is easy to understand and start from Genesis onward. The New Testament is easier to understand and relate to than the Old Testament.

WHAT I LEARNED WHEN I BEGAN TO STUDY THE BIBLE

I did not get far until I saw that all I had been taught did not fit into the bible, so I had to make a choice.
As a child, I did not have all in my head that I did at age 27. It hurts to get it out and except a scripture that you did not know before. The bible is the worst of the worst as people can be the worst of the worst, very few people in the bible want it God's way.

Soon I said,"All the people that are involved with God to try his way, is for one sheet of paper."
This is his earth and soil that they and all of us are on. Forgive our trespasses?
Pay attention to relatives as Pharoahs, it is a disguise, they do not want relatives to
know them. From Abraham to Moses, who would give who a drink of water?
It is something to think about.
Then Jesus. He was crucified, resurrected and ascended for a purpose, all thing in time and in order.
So take on the fruits of the spirit and Heb.4:12; and John 10:34-36; Remember the power of the word of God, and thanks to God we have it. Read the Prayer Jesus prayed John 17:1-26; And Matt.6:9-13 in Jesus name now John 14:13-15,26,28, 16:23,26; and Matt.3:16,17; 16:16,17;

R.C. Sproul has a video series on this topic that I think is excellent. If you want to check them out (free), click here: http://www.ligonier.org/index.php and select the "Video" tab & scroll down to the "How to Study the Bible" titles. They're two parts.

Enjoy and God bless!

Find a good commentary book....start small -- maybe the Gospel of Matthew or the Gospel of Luke and then the Acts of the Apostles -- also written by Luke.

HOW TO STUDY YOUR BIBLE

1.Be sure you are saved: 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
2.Recognize the authority of the scriptures: Psalms 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
3.Believe literally what you read: 2 Timothy 2:7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
4.Know your apostle: Romans 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. Romans 11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: Matthew 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
5.Know the books that are doctrine for you: The books that begin with your apostle’s name “PAUL” are doctrine for you and it is always the first word in each book he is inspired to write. Example: Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 Thessalonians 3:17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write. In the first chapter of ever book Paul writes he from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ and says grace and peace. 1 Corinthians 1:3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
6.Know that all other books of the Bible that are not written by Paul are for your learning. Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. 1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
7.Know that all the Bible is true but all the books of the Bible are not written to you: 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
8.Use the law of first mention: The first time a word is mentioned, trace it all through the Bible and you can understand it’s meaning.
9.Know that each verse has three purposes: (1) To show a historical setting. (2) One doctrine interpretation. (3) Many applications.
10.Observe the content by reading each verse before and after any verse in question.
11.Recognize progress revelation by knowing that the Bible is laid out in a dispensation order. Colossians 1:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Romans 14:5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Colossians 2: 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Galatians 4:10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
12.Ask the following question about each verse:
(1). Who is speaking?
(2) Whom is he speaking to?
(3)What is he speaking about?
(4)What does it say about the person to whom he is speaking?
(5)What action is required?
(6)What does it say about the subject?
Does the action require seemingly go against other passages?
