I have some pressure fit baby gates but the problem is I can not install them firmly enough because of how far my baseboards stick out/how tall they are.

I can't just install them above the baseboards because my dog needs to be able to jump them.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do they sell some sort of adapter to make the top stopper longer so it will make better contact with the wall?

Money is tight so I would rather not have to buy new gates.

I meant to mention that the baseboard can not be removed as the walls are aged gypsum bord with a layer of texturized plaster and I have been told if I pull the baseboards the wall crumble.

Yes 1970's plaster to make my hall look like bricks was a great plan. Thank you previous owners!

You could cut a piece of wood to fit on either side of the door (where the top of the gate would be), and screw the pieces in the door frame. This would even the width out, and you could install your gate safely.

I agree with member star22s answer about the wood, but if you own the home you could cut that section of baseboard out with a handheld jigsaw tool then once the gate is put up then you won't notice that part of the baseboard missing. It can always be glued back to the wall in the future.

If you are in a rental then you need to ask the property manager if you could have part of the baseboard taken out. Make it sound like it is a important safety issue that you MUST have a baby gate in place and the baseboard is in the way of the gate being properly installed. If they make a fuss then you can always say that you will 'restore' the area yourself at NO cost to the owner.

Pressure Fitted Baby Gate

You can put up another piece of trim that is the same thickness as your baseboards on your wall where the top of the gate goes. You can either just use a 2x4 or something that looks nice. Just nail it into the studs and then you can take it down when you are done using the gates. Hope that helps!

Most baby gates have tensioners that screw in and out to hold the gates in place. You can screw the ones at the bottom where the baseboards are out just a little bit, and the ones at the top out a lot.

I would reccommend making an adapter with a piece of wood. Make it the right size to make the gate fit. If possible secure it to the wall with nails or screws. If not the pressure may hold it in place. It may not be very pretty but it will work and is cheap. Good Luck.
