Try telling that to a bomb squad that now utilizes robotic help to not only recover, but dispose of incendiary and explosive devices.

Some of the first robots were actually used in movies, remember Robbie the Robot from "Forbidden Planet"? Then all those fun toy robots.
Then I guess some were used for large applications like moving things. The technology was not there for much.
As, technology progressed then robots were used more in Assembly and of course War applications. They vacuum, mow yards, paint, build microscopic electronic and nano stuff.
So, now robots do about anything people do, actually more, just many companies do not have the resources to convert to robotics.

The first robots were industrial robots mostly used in automotive industry.
These days, robots are used everywhere, including in medicine and military.
The robots have become highly sophisticated thanks to the development of electronics and neural learning.
In future, we may even have robots who think and react to stimului based on its learnings.

robots paint the cars at ford now, among other things to assemble autos.
they cost people jobs, the original intent, to save money for corporations.
I bet since cameras are catching speeders, there will be less police. And they use robots now (or are going to) in disarming bombs.
