My shitzu is 9 and all over his body he is flaky with dry skin. He has always had dry skin, but as he getts older his skin getts worse. He has a great diet, I wash him with a special oatmeal shampoo 2/3 times a month, and I give him treats a couple times a day. Nothing seems to help. When I do a search to find a a cure the resultes are expensive pills. Without having to take him to a vet, what can I do to cure or help his dry skin?

There are 2 more things I would try, the cheapest being to go to walmart and pick you up some cod liver oil, or any other fish oils they have there (cod liver is the best, but really any is worth a shot).. they will have it in liquid form and in capsules. I would buy the capsules so measurement isnt needed, just cut open the capsules and pour the liquid over the food. This was recommended for my dry skinned cat and it worked great. I am assuming that the taste will be as good for the dog as the cat. Also, vets as well as pet stores sell a capsule that isnt too expensive and works the same way (all vets seem to have a diff name for it) They will most likely be more expensive than the oil, but more effective as they are made for animal consumption. Try the cod liver oil first and see how that works. (However, the results wont be overnight, they say it can take 30-60 days to start effecting the skin and coat, just keep at it and be patient!)

Go to any leading pet store such as Petsmart and purchase Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner (ONLY using every 2-3 months).
Then, feed your shitzu either half of a raw egg in it's food. Try keeping your dog on a good eating regime by not feeding it too much food. You can also buy vitamin supplements for a dogs skin and coat (ask your vet first though).
Good Luck!

You can try an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement, but if there's an underlying medical issue, like hypothyroidism, it will never go away until you address it. If it is hypothyroidism, those pills are actually pretty cheap. But it could also be allergies or one of several other problems-you will never know if you don't see a vet and do the tests. Dermatology problems aren't always easy to figure out.

You may think your dog has a great diet but it may not be the best diet for him. I have my dogs on a low carb, high meat diet. The feed I use is Innova Evo. They are doing a lot better. Their coats look great and they have not had dry rashes since.

The addition of Linatone(sp) is good too. You may also be washing your dog too much. Unless he gets into something really dirty you may reduce baths to one every two months.

When my dog had very dry skin, our vet had us put about 1/2 Tablespoon of vegetable oil on her food. This stopped her dry skin and even made her coat shiny! You may check with your vet to make sure its completely safe for YOUR dog. Hope that works for you.

My dog has the same problem. What it is, is it isn't only dry skin but the dog scratches itself. FLEAS! Did that come to mind? Well in the rear of the dog...butt... the thing gets overfilled (I can't think of the name) and it would make the dog irritated but it would one day pop like a boil, I'm not sure if can pop. Or the dog has a dirty behind and you have to put some cream on it.

It could be his diet, try switching his food.
Also buy fish oil tablets is probally the safest to way to go without consulting a vet.
i would take your dog to the vet anyway because his getting older. he sould have an annual exam every year or at least every 2 years

That's how my puppy was when we got her. What we did was buy a shampoo that specialized in that and it cleared it up all the way. We also made sure her food helped her skin.
