a pirate ship

If a ship is NON-aggressive then NOTHING is done unless there is intel to indicate that it might be hostile or smuggling.

There are a TON of reasons that the "CAP" might choose to board or not.

If the decision is made a boat (not ship) will intercept and board. Depending upon the situation analysis there could be air support (helos with deployed SF) or a boat could intercept and "Request permission to board and inspect".

This is when it gets SCARRY! The ship has guns trained and a party boards, permission given or NOT.

There are side arms, semi-automatic weapons, shotguns with REALLY short barrels, flash bang and C-4.

When you step aboard the deck EVERY PERSON is ASSUMED combatant. The adrenilline is SCREAMING and the reactions are TIGHT! If somebody moves WRONG then it turns into a SH** STORM.

The SCARRY thing is that if the "CAP" feels like it is going down the tubes a 5" round is put into the bow and they are raked with 50 caliber machine guns; you PRAY that you are aft when that happens and know how to DANCE!

The boat is seached and disarmed, charges placed and THE LORD sorts out the innocent.

You get in your boat and go HOME.

If you are asking as a civilian, now you know. If you are assigned "boarding party duty", GO STRONG (U2 lyric)

BE SAFE, BE STRONG and come home SAFE; I SALUTE YOU!

There are certain areas where navy ships hunt pirates. Generally they send a helicopter to chase the ship and use small craft to board the ship if it's around Africa, especially Somalia or international waters. A minigun or hellfire missle can make short work of a pirate ship. If it flees to waters controlled by a friendly nation, they just call the country's coast guard/navy and the pirate ship is then captured that way. Pirate ships are generally just fishing trollers with a few armed men. They get behind large ships, generally cargo ships and try to board them. Cargo ships generally don't have a large crew themselves and most are unarmed.

So you were on the bridge when it happened? Who knows how i went down. Just because there is not a word for word account in the article doesn't mean it was the US Navy's fault. Someone COULD have made an error on the tanker. You and I were not there that's why the NAVY will do an investigation. Guess sitting at your keyboard makes you qualified to know how the bridge of a destroyer is run?

us ships pull along side ships and board them for searches. any time you think navy aren't brave, remember this. the boarding parties carry pistols and fire axes and knives. that is what you call hand close quarters combat! Im a soldier, and i say hooah navy.
