I have had acne for about 3-4 years now..I am 15 years old and becoming extremely self concious about it...Its not like horrible but I know i would have more friends and have a better social life if i got rid of the pimples and blackheads.. I bathe every morning and have used various face wash products including pro-active at night time..and my breakouts seem to get worse.. I have been told stress is also a factor, so i have definately cut my stress life whether its school or parents in half..and they keep appearing every morning..Is there absouletly anything i could do or is this just a teenage stage i gotta get through..I workout and never eat fast food..am i missing anything?

HI Metalman

Here are some real answers on skin conditions. Remedies at the bottom. Cleansing the body of toxins is the key. Especially a colon cleanse! Educate yourself on detoxifying the blood.

Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman N.D. - "What is your skin trying to tell you? Often the skin is a metaphor for deeper issues and a way for your body to send up a red flag to warn you that all is not well underneath. When our skin is unhealthy it is usually a reflection of the internal state of our bodies, and is often a sign of poor elimination of toxins and waste products. Most of us are embarrassed by skin problems such as rashes, rosacea, boils or acne, especially in places where others can see our imperfections. The skin is the body's first line of defense against the environment. It has to deal with the effects of weather, sun , cold, heat, dryness, humidity, scrapes, bumps, soaps, detergents, chemicals, perspiration and dirt of all kinds. It is a wonder that our skin stays healthy most of the time! We can help our skin deal with this onslaught by optimizing our general health and by protecting our skin from harsh environmental exposure. Western medicine generally treats skin eruptions with either antibiotics, cortisone, or antifungal preparations. These medicines may alleviate the skin problem temporarily, or occasionally for good, but do not address the source of the problem. Putting a lid on skin symptoms without getting to the root of the imbalance may even result in suppression, that means the imbalance may be driven deeper causing more serious health problems later without ever strengthening the underlying vital force of the person. Fortunately, naturopathic medicine offers a wide vareity of effective treatments for skin problems."

Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman N.D. - "Your skin is a reflection of how well your body is eliminating the toxins that build up on a daily basis. Chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis stem from a combination of genetic factors, immune stress, dietary deficiencies or sensitivities, and the accumulation of toxins in the body. For our skin to be radiant and clear, it is very important that the other organs of elimination (kidneys, liver, lungs, and colon) are cleansing the body effectively. If not, the skin will be overtaxed, pores will become clogged, and eruptions of one sort or another will result. Here are a number of steps you can take to improve your body's overall elimination wtih specific emphasis on your skin."

Detoxification is a normal body process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin. Fasting is the world's most ancient and natural healing mechanism. Fasting triggers a truly wondrous cleansing process that reaches right down to each and every cell and tissue in the body.

Natural Cures

1. Fruits and Vegetables for Acne: Carrot & spinach, celery & watercress, grapefruit juices are all useful to combat acne.

2. Unwholesome Foods: Acne, a prevalent problem among teen-aged boys would not be possible in our society if our foods were wholesome. A most sad and disgusting sight is the pus-filled pimples due to inner toxicity --- wastes trying desperately to escape through the face. This condition often turns a gentle face in the blossom of youth into a waste dump of pimples, pus and subsequent pock marks which can be prevented. The tons of acne medications and prescriptions sold annually act only on the effect of the harmful food, and not the cause of the disease, malnutrition. The traditional teenage meal, a grease burger, french fries and a milk shake or cola simply does not provide enough nourishment for anyone, let alone a boy going through puberty to adulthood. Our highly processed foods are devoid of hormones found in fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. Must do a colon cleanse to rid of all the toxins in the body, which eventually get into the blood and cause acne and all other diseases.

3. Cabbage: Apply a lotion of freshly prepared cabbage juice preceded, if desired, by the application of leaves. The eating of cabbage leaves or juice is also helpful.

4. Lemon Juice: Skin problems such as acne... will often respond to a treatment of lemon juice. For blackheads rub lemon juice over them each night.

5. Black Walnut: Externally, Black Walnut is nearly a miracle worker in cases of ...acne, dandruff, boils, itch, shingles, ringworm--we could go on, but you can see that you can use Black Walnut whenever a skin disorder appears! The tincture is an excellent first-aid remedy for wounds.

Best of health to you

I am 28 and still deal with acne, although it's not as bad as when I was a teenager. Here are some things that worked for me. The number one thing you can do is drink a lot of water. Believe it or not, your skin will clear up tremendously if you drink at least 9 glasses of water a day. Use mild cleansers, like Cetaphil, which will not irritate your skin. If you use harsh cleansers a lot, it will make your skin worse. Use an oil free moisturizer after you wash your face. Keep using the facial cream that was prescribed to you and try a multivitamin. Greasy foods and chocolate will NOT cause pimples, but the more healthy you eat, the better your skin will be. Try getting some exercise as well, as this will also help your skin. As for the friend situation, keep your head up. You seem like an awesome guy. Try to be self-confidant and people will like you whatever your skin looks like!!!

I dealt with acne in high school, so I can understand your agony. For some people, its only an issue during the teenage years, but my mom dealt with acne well past her youth and that motivated her to want to get some help for me while I was young. After trying various antibiotics (waste of time) and other topical creams, my doctor and parents (i was a minor at the time) agreed to let me take the drug Accutane. This is a controversial drug, and the decision to take it should be made after careful consideration. The drug works internally much like the topical drug "Retin-A" does. Only, because it works internally, there can be serious consequences of not following your doctor's instructions. For me, it worked miracles. For some, it can cause depression (which doesn't exactly help when you're dealing with acne). I used to have very oily skin, and now, 9 years after taking it, my skin is much more normal...definitely not oily, and I don't get those giant cyst-like (very painful) pimples anymore. I wish you the best. If you can, find how who the best dermatologist in your area is and get on their waiting list. Best of luck to you.

PS-My dermatologist told me that your diet doesn't cause acne.

I think you ought to go back to your doctor. Sometimes a fairly long course of antibiotics can bring an improvement in acne. It's important that you let your doctor know how much this is getting you down so he realises that he has to try different treatments till he finds the right one for you.

I know that I cant help you in any great way with how you are feeling about yourself because of this but I hope you find the truth to be that many people see way beyond skin when they look at you and that anyone who doesn't is too shallow to deserve your company and friendship.

Good luck!

Karma.

Sounds like you're on the right track, watching your diet is key like you said. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of water and cutting out things like soda, sugar, and fast food are key. (My brother did this and saw incredible results)

Next up, make sure the cleansing product you are using does NOT contain alcohol. This will irritate your skin even more causing further break outs. 5 to 10% benzoyl peroxide cream is good for spot treatment of acne spots. Neutrogena Fresh and Foaming face wash or Cetophil are great cleansers.

I think that you just have to give this time....... and wait for this stage to finish.
Your hormones are all over the place right now, and most acne or cystic acne is caused by hormones, so once they settle down, so should your skin.
Treat your skin gently, and avoid harsh cleansers or treatments. A pure baby-type soap worked best for my kids, because it didn't dry their skin out - which only caused the oil glands to flare up again, repeating the whole cycle.

Acne isn't caused by fast foods, or greasy foods, so you don't have to cut all fast food out. But when my son worked the fryer ar McDonalds, the oil in the air caused his acne to get worse and his uniforms used to stink something awful! They moved him to the front counter, and it cleared right up again.

Just be patient and you'll get through this....
