I feel, you are sort of correct. I reckon alot of atheist, and I understand this completely, hate anything that even remotely sounds like Christianity. Some atheist can feel like they are having religion forced upon them if you just suggest routine in their life.
However the problem is with the word 'God'. What wouldn't be accepted is any of the theology's that come along with it, and without the theology, their 'God' disappears
If you mean 'God' as some sort of Eternal, all powerfull, 'prime mover', then you are SORT OF correct.
EDIT
Also, if it was a recent scientific theory, it no doubt would have been based on facts, and come from the scientific community that is alot more trustworthy than it coming from church, or the bible.

I have a problem with hypothetical situations. Try as I might, I have a hard time divorcing from reality (even in my fantasies, more's the pity).
Anyway, such a thing being proven by science is so unlikely....even if the existence of a godlike being could be proven, the whole kit and caboodle of any religion just couldn't come along with it.
So assuming a god creature were found, I might be able to buy that. But there's just no way any credibility could be given to the bible and the other myths.

A scientific theory is thought up by men, but unlike just believing, it has some actual proof attached to it.
Scientists will never prove the existence of the Christian god, because such a god as described in the Bible can not exist. But, I am confident that science will begin to find evidence suggesting that there is "something" that comes close to what we think of as deities.

This is an interesting question. Many people believe in black holes although we have to take the word of a very small group that they actually exist. And most of the people in the world cannot understand the concept of a black hole and how many people understand the theory of black holes?
I believe in black holes though and God is not that hard to believe in either.

You may be right. I wonder how much of the fact that worshipping a God is historical and "old hat" to them plays into their views.

Well I don't believe everything Disney comes up with either, so you can scrap that notion. (And no, I'm not a big all sciencey minded person, so that dispels your myth that we are THAT totally into science too. Though I trust it more then a story book.)

yeah, well scientific theory means there's something tangible involved that can be discussed in a 'scientific' way. unlike the intangible God you like to theorize about. hehehe...
