I live in Hawaii - suggest the Courtyard by Marriott in Kapaa Kauai for a moderately priced hotel ... the Big Island is a little more difficult, but the Kona Seaside is relatively inexpensive, if all you want is a place to stay with very little luxury.

On Kauai just near the Sheraton in Poipu you might find the Kiahuna Plantation more to your liking. Each room is a condo basically with a kitchen. Roy's and Keoki's restaurant are right across the street. Gaylords Restaurant is about a 15 minute car ride away. On the Big Island the Hilton Waikoloa is very nice. You can take a tram or a boat to your room from the lobby. Four swimming pools and a man made lagoon. The Hilton is kid friendly.

The Garden Island Inn just south of Lihue, Kauai is moderately, and fairly priced. Nothing fancy, but it has easy beach access, it's clean and comfortable, and has a very friendly staff. The Volcano Inn is a nice bed & breakfast on The Big Island, it's on Kilauea, and is very reasonably priced. If you've never been to these two islands, you're in for a treat, especially Kauai. Don't miss Waimea Canyon.

If you're planning to stay for more than a few days, look into renting a condo. We stayed in a nice two bedroom condo in Princeville (Kauai) that was right on the bluffs and both rooms overlooked the ocean. The price was right, especially if you share w/another traveler. I recommend www.kauaivacationrentals.com if you want to look into this kind of accommodation.

The Sheraton near Poipu Bay in Kauai is great and includes breakfast. It is more family oriented. If you do not have kids check out the other options near Poipu. The Marriott near the airport is expensive as is the Hyatt near Poipu. The Princeton area is also expensive.
