It is quite common for internists (specialist in internal medicine) to handle patients who have strokes. Particularly since most strokes are caused by vascular disease, which is usually managed with blood pressure/cholesterol medications and anti-platelet medicines (like aspirin or Plavix).

Like the answer said above, her doctor might consider sending her to a Neurologist (specialist in the brain and spinal cord) if her doctor suspects a more complicated type of stroke or she has recurrent strokes despite therapy.

Good luck.

An internal medicine doctor is good for this problem BUT
she may need to change doctors! If there are any doctors
specializing in geriatrics (the treatment of older people), she
would do well to see one.
Also, if she will let you or your mom--go with her to her next
appointment. Notice if the doctor really cares and listens to
your grandma; and ask him about her proper medication.
If you trust this doctor, someone may want to ask him if
this is the inevitable beginning of the end. It is a fact of
life sweetie and you need to prepare yourself. Once an
elder begins having strokes, it is hard to stabilize them
let alone bring back their previous health.
