I go to college about 12 hours driving-time from home, and have several breaks over the course of the school year. While I'm away at school, my parents use my room as a guest room, and my 3 younger siblings use it as a form of entertainment. Every time I come home, several of my things have been gone through and/or taken and/or ruined, such as clothing, CDs, DVDs, etc. I have discussed this matter with my parents several times, and they have discussed it with my siblings many times as well. How can I find a way to either keep my siblings out of my room, or teach them to respect my things and my privacy? Thanks!

If your parents can't control your siblings you have a different problem. If it's your room they should have learned to respect that long before you left for college. As for your CDs and DVDs I suggest you get a case that locks to keep them in or take them with you.

I'm in a similar situation, except the talks worked for me. If it is made clear that siblings are financially responsible for what is destroyed, that might help. Otherwise I would recommend a lock which your parents have the key to, so it can be a guest room if needed and otherwise will be off limits.

You can't teach your siblings to respect your things or your privacy. That's your parents job. Since they seem to be falling down on the job, I'd suggest a good sturdy lock on your closet door. I'd put anything that I want to have when I get home in it and lock it up safe and sound.

Buy a huge metal, decorative cabinet which you can lock and keep everything there. They will have no choice but to learn, including your parents.

You don't live there anymore and it's no longer your room!
