Mark 8:31-33: And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man."

Also, who did Peter rebuke before Jesus rebuked him?

Jesus was rebuking Peter because he was unintentionally interfering with Jesus' mission to save mankind. Peter was not looking at things from God's mind, but from a human basis. In doing so, he placed himself in opposition of God at that moment (which he probably didn't mean to do) and anything that is in opposition of God supports Satan. This is why Jesus said, "Get behind me, Satan!" Jesus was basically making Peter straighten up and "get back in line", so to speak.

The word or name Satan means resister. Devil means slanderer. Thus this angel turned demon is called Satan the Devil, or Resister the Slanderer. Peter was called resister (Satan) because he was suggesting that Jesus "resist" God's will and not carry it out. Although Peter meant well, it was a serious misstep. In suggesting that Jesus resist God's will, Peter was imitating Satan who made the same suggestion to the first couple in the Garden of Eden. They succumbed. Jesus recognized the suggestion for what it really was and immediately rejected it, at the same time, rebuking Peter for it. Peter needed an immediate attitude adjustment, which he made. Jesus rebuked Peter because Peter was thinking of mans benefit and not of the things of God. Jesus had a mission to complete, that cross was the salvation of the world. Peter was only thinking that Christ would lead them in a rebellion against Rome. Peter was thinking small, while Christ was thinking Large.

Because Peter was Jesus' disciple and good friend. Peter was "rebuking" Jesus, in other words telling him not to say what he was saying, thus, he was sinning. You know how they say Satan whispers lies and evil that comes out of your mouth, here is an example, so Jesus rebuked Satan to stay away from Peter because Peter belong to God and God protects what his his.

Because Jesus saw who was behind the scene(who made Peter say that). If he would have listen to Peter he would have never gone to the cross and the spirit who gave Peter that thought would have outpowered the plans of God. So because demons need vessels to do their work, used Peter, tha's why Jesus could rebuke the demon that was in Peter who allowed him to speak. Clearly if Peter was familiar with the plans of God that would not have came out of his mouth. Who's behind the scenes when you speak? Is it God or Satan? If it is Satan than once you think the thought beofre speaking tell Satan to get behind you. Only praise will come out of your lips, and the things of God.

Peter did not understand the plan...He thought that Jesus was going to lead a revolt against Rome and establish an earthly "Kingdom of Heaven" at that time.. Jesus rebuked that plan as "mans plan" (Satan's attempt to change the eternal plan) rather than dying for a spiritual kingdom based on the sacrifice of Jesus "Gods plan".

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Peter had been with Jesus for sometime now,and yet he failed to see the necessity that Christ should be crucified. When we lack the need to realize just what Jesus has done for us we are on sandy ground and not on the rock.

The last sentence of the scripture provides the answer to your question: he was more interested in himself then the work of God that meant that he would have to sacrifice instead of reaping a reward.
