Now that my son is in school, all of the kids call me Mrs. So-and-so (really, that's not my last name, but you get the idea).

I am sooooooooo not used to it, yet.

I feel like my MOTHER IN LAW should be behind me.

It is respect that the children are showing you. Be grateful they are showing their good manners.

I understand totally! When I started teaching, the principal asked me what I wanted to be called. I hadn't thought about it. I told her that I would feel sooo old to be call "Miss ****" so she suggested that they call me "Miss Mary." (Not my first name.) That sounded like I was a Southern belle or something, so I went with my last name. It took some getting used to, but I did.

Now that I'm married, it still sounds strange to be called Mrs. *** and I still forget after five years. I guess I'll get used to that too!

If you feel real uncomfortable, you could tell the kids to call you "Mrs. You first name." Even as a kid I thought calling adults by their first name only sounded disrespectful and I never did it.

It's a sign of respect. I do it to this day. If i'm at work and i've got an older co-worker then me i'll call em Mrs. or Mr. then their first name. That's kinda like calling your boss sir or ma'am. For me it's a force of habit. I never until i was 16 or 17 called our neighbors by their first name and then once again i added the mr. or mrs. I even call my in laws ma'am and sir even his grandparents...i call my parents either mom and dad or ma'am and sir depends on the situation.

LOL. It's probably just how their parents have told them to talk to adults.

Different families have different ideas. Our good friends are all "Aunt Helen" and "Uncle Johnny" (etc.) to our daughter. I work with children, and, depending on their families, they've called me by just "Kathleen", "Ms. K____", or "Miss Kathleen".

Different families have different ideas, but you're certainly within your rights to say something like, "I can tell your parents are raising you with good manners. With our friends, we usually go by first names, so, you may call me "Susie" if you like".

Some kids will still persist with the "Mrs. So and So" though :-)

I have kids call me by my first name. Mrs. so and so is my mother in laws name. There is nothing wrong with kids calling you by your first name.

I don't like it much, but whatever the child is supposed to call me according to the parents is okay by me. The thing that unnerves me is learning that one doesn't call oneself by a title, so you don't say "I'm Mrs. So and So" you say, "I'm Joan So and So" and people are supposed to say, "Nice to meet you, Mrs. So and so."
Doing this properly means you introduce yourself to young people as "Joan So and SO." Many parents don't know one doesn't refer to oneself with a title, and wonder why you are calling yourself that around their kid.

In the scheme of things, this is all quite minor, tho.

My son's friends can call me "Miss FirstName" or "Mrs. So-and-so". One of them calls me "Mrs. My-Son's-Name", which works, too.

I'm most comfortable with Miss FirstName, but I'll answer to all of them. I think it's important for children to show respect for adults by including a title, if appropriate.

all my kids friends call me Rachel. It is easy for them and i would rather that than Mrs. as I am not a Mrs. Even if it was Miss... I would still rather Rachel

I love it! I like knowing that other people recognize me as a wife to a wonderful man :-) "Ms" would insult me terribly! It makes me feel like I'm 16!

NO, I PREFER FOR THEM TO CALL ME BY MY FIRST NAME.
EVEN THOUGH THE TEACHERS SAY IT IS NOT NICE, I WILL
SAY IT IS OKAY BY ME. I'M 47 AND I STILL DON'T WANT TO
BE CALLED BY MS. GARCIA, IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE IF I WAS
AROUND MY MOMS AGE(AN ELDERLY PERSON). I CAN WAIT UNTIL I'M A LITTLE MORE OLDER, I DON'T WANT TO
RUSH IT.
