In the King James version, I believe it says, roughly re-stated, not to tell a soul as well. I would suspect that Jesus would so direct him for a number of reasons. First, miracles were sacred. Jesus was not a showman and did not want his blessings to the faithful to be sensationalized. Second, there was a lot of controversy surrounding Jesus at the time, so He would not want to stir unnecessary commotion that would attract attention to himself. Third, I believe he wanted followers primarily based on faith in who he was, not solely in the miracles he performed (a sign of who he was). He did not want superficial faith in those who would be believers.

Because He wanted the blind man to go home and show them the mercy of God that his blindness was taken away. And also that if he should go into the village and spread the word that He would not be able to enter into to spread the gospel. Which did occur on several occasions after Jesus performed a miracle.

There are many such references in the New Testament where Jesus heals someone and then tells them not to say anything. Jesus was becoming more and more popular by the day. He needed personal time to pray and teach His disciples. He asked them to keep him a secret, because He had other ministries to perform as well as healing people. Jesus was trying to prevent His reputation from becoming like a carnival activity. He wanted the people there to listen to His teachings and not just marvel at His works. I think He mostly realized His need for prayer and was finding quality time alone in prayer harder to do.

The time for him to die was not that time, and if the man revealed that he was healed it would have angered the religious leaders and they would have killed him earlier, then they did. Or so is what I am told.
