I know it sounds crazy ,but one word at a time.Get a Strong's Concordance.Check out each word.Remember a word will have one meaning in a verse then a totally different meaning in another verse.
First thing you do is pray.Ask God to open your eyes and your heart. To anoint you to the understanding of His word.
Best books to study,Matthew,Mark,Luke,John. They teach us the most about Jesus.
God Bless you as you learn.

Read it slowly. Even if you don't read much its better to read a little and understand it , then read a lot and not get anything out of it. I suggest reading Proverbs, & the New Testament First. Especially Revelations. If you would like to understand the future. Then study this site. You will amazed at what most of the christians do not know about the bible.

Try getting an NIV Student Bible. Even if you're not a student, it's really helpful.
Right now, I'm going back and forth between the minor prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, etc.) and the Pauline epistles (1&2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephisians, Phillipians, etc.). It's good to see the similarities between the two.
Yeah, so NIV Student Bible is really good.

one word at a time and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.
The Truth cannot mislead you.
Find a good teacher or elder. Good to learn from someone knowledgeable. Bible studies with a group helps, too.

Saved? That is past tense.
Anyway, since you sound Baptist, get Youngs Concordance. Or just think on your own. Treat like the great book it is. Read and wonder. Read and think. Read and discuss with a nuetral person.
It does little good to read it with a person who agrees with all you do. But do not argue it. It is too deep, too profound, and too interesting for us to understand.

One way is to start at the beginning of both new and old testaments.(Genesis and Matthew).maybe one chapter of each per day.
Single out topics of interest to study also.Using concordance look up references to: compassion, hope, faith, repentance etc.
