No easy answer here. You have to know the body of water you are fishing and the variables associated with it. For instance, a weedy shallow lake is probably best fished with a spinner bait and not a crankbait. If the weather conditions are overcast and the water is murky, use gold blades. Bright blue-bird days and clear water are tough to fish because fish tend to hold close to structure and can see your lure very well. This is when you downsize to something small and with a clearer color. Bass can be finicky. But if I had three lures to take with me fishing on any body of water, it would be a spinnerbait (gold blades and gold, silver combo), a senko or tiki or yum dinger softbait (cast it out and hold on!) and a white grub. I mention the last because every gosh darn fish can be caught on one of these. #1 fish catching lure EVER!

I have 2 favorite lures for fishing bass. One of my favorite lure for fishing small/largemouth bass is the spinnerbait. I like my spinnerbait white and small, because the smaller the bait, the bigger the fish bite. I fish from the shoreline, never from boat; so I would throw my spinnerbait horizontally to my left or right, reeling it slowly catching nice size 1-2 pounder. Another favorite lure of mine is the weedless worm. Purple and rasberry flavor/smell is my flavor. Technique i used to catch bass are throwing it ontop of lily pads and letting it slowly hitting the water. Another tech is to let it sit in the bottom and slowly jiggle it to shore. The best tech for me to use a weedless worm, is to slowly drift it in shadow water; this is where i catch my 22 inch bass.

my fav lures are jigs and tubes, throw in a buzzbait for early morning, and big spinners for slow rolling in 40' of water.
as far as color and size............green pumpkin, pumpkin seed, watermelon seed seem to be my fav colors for jigs and tubes in 3-3 1/2" and jigs 1/4 to 1/2 oz
big spinners 1 1/2oz to 2 oz for deep water................i really dont think color is that big of a deal, but i do like shiney blades in colorado shapes for loud vibrations and thumping
i also like the small brushogs and speed fall worms

If I was restricted to one bait it would be 6 inch black lizards with blue tails rigged weedless with no weight or 1/8th ounce bullet sinker.
