If it's a dry irritating cough(as in not producing sputum) you need to obtain a cough suppressant - honey is also useful for coating the back of the throat and providing relief and, as it is a natural product, it also has it's own built in antibiotic. Additionally, using steam (put you head over a steaming bowl of water and cover it with a towel or run the hot water tap in the bathroom for 10 minutes), will also help to moisten your airways and lessen the irritation.
Now, if the cough IS producing sputum (as in you are hacking gunky green/yellow/brown stuff up) - THIS IS GOOD, as your body is already fighting and removing the unwanted virus that's attacking you.
Lastly, if your throat is PAINFUL (and no doubt it will be), gargle with soluble paracetamol to kill the throat pain, then swallow this as it will help with the headache that you usually get from coughing so much.

Sounds like you have a sinus infection along with post nasal drip that is causing the cough. You should go to the doc and get an antibiotic for the sinus and maybe a antihistimine to help with that annoying irritation. If no doc, something over the counter will probably work.

If you're a smoker, give up now. Should others be smoking around you, ask them to go outside.
There are a few instances, even in Winter, when certain pollens eg Oak and mahonia bush, can cause symptoms like this.
A visit to your friendly GP is a must!
