last week my manicurist cut my nail bed. (yes, she's fired) i cleaned the cut with betadine and put a band aid with an antibiotic ointment on it. it is still very painful, and now my finger tip is slightly swollen, red with a little bit of pus. (gross i know) i'm worried about an infection and/or blood poisoning. what are the symptoms of blood poisoning, and has anyone had a similar cut or injury? and when should i be worried? i hate going to the doctor!

It sounds like you have a local infection in your finger. It probably isn't blood poisoning, as you would be very ill. The swelling, redness, and pus in your finger means that it is almost certainly infected, and you may need antibiotics. Keep the area really clean and put some Neosporin on it until you can see your doctor. Signs that the infection is spreading is further swelling, red streaks moving down your hand, arm etc., and fever. Hope this helps.

Any open wound may cause blood poisoning. This is a systemic infection. Usually deep puncture wounds (such as stepping on a nail) just might cause this. Animal bites or other traumas that may introduce bacteria may cause this. So unless you have an uncompromised immune system, blood poisoning would be very rare unless induced through broken skin. The hallmark would be red streaks around the area. See a medical professional if there is any question. Blood poisoning is easily stopped with an injection of antibiotics. Good luck Antonio

You could soak it in Epsom salts - clean it with alcohol. - mash the pus out. - Go to see your family doctor. Blood poisoning is serious., if you have blood poisoning you would see RED streaks going up your finger. Be sure to keep it very clean. and if you do the above., your finger should get better. Good Luck and God Bless.

It may be infected.

"Blood poisoning" is when an infection invades the entire body via the blood. Your entire arm would potentially be red and painful. You would have a fever and feel really lousy.

Get the infection checked before it gets worse.
