No there not the same. Global warming is just as it sounds, the Earth is in a period of warming. The greenhouse effect is the mechanism in which some people belive the warming is happening. They belive that CO2 is traping the suns radiation and heating the Earth. There is no real science to support this and the Earth has been much warmer at many times throughout its history, even before the industrial revolution where man was putting CO2 into the atmosphere. They are connected. Greenhouse gases (mainly CO2) thicken the atomosphere plus it eats the ozone layer away. The ozone layer deflects dangerous radiation waves which are more likely to enter the atmosphere. Also the Atmophere is thicker not letting as much of this heat out. This is the greenhouse effect.
