The only time you can cut spaghetti is if A) You are eating it at home alone or B) If it's for a child under the age of 4. When you are eating spaghetti in public you must employ the "twirl" technique. Most Italian eateries will supply you with a slightly larger spoon when served long pasta. What you do is take your fork and begin to twirl a bit onto it, then you take the spoon and use it to gather them up into a manageable mouthful. There will always be some unruly danglers, but the spoon will alleviate the really long ones. When neatness counts, order ziti!

I believe you can "properly" cut spaghetti with your fork, and not offend Emily Post (Miss Manners). We do this for small kids (who might otherwise choke), and there is really nothing wrong with trying to make a daintier portion for yourself. Also, there is the added unsightliness of trying to cram a huuuuuuuge knot of spaghetti into your mouth! Nobody can look prim and proper doing that!

I always cut my spaghetti. I just had it for dinner too. I don't like the twirling thing with the spoon it's weird.

Cutting it is a good idea. I always cut mine rather than twirl it. It's grose when someone sucks a long piece of spaghetti into their mouths too. ugh!

I'm Italian, so Carly: the hell with you!

Answering your question: I don't like it when people cut the spaghetti. I feel that anyone who wants to eat shorter pasta should do so, instead of choosing spaghetti, and not eat them the proper way.

I cut too.. you are not alone! lol

Perhaps if we are cutters, in public we should cut one mouthful at a time versus the entire plate. I'm not sure what the rule is there, as far as I know it was twirl or nothing.. :)

Nothing wrong with cutting, it is just more fun to put on a bib, like when you eat lobster, and let the sauce fly. Not polite? Well, don't order it in polite society.

Ghetti cutters unite! Our time will come!

Yup - always cut the stuff into smaller bites. Best with butter and salt, IMHO! That and a little garlic powder!

Yumm!

In Italy, they use a fork and spoon to twirl it into the spoon. Well, this isn't Italy. We cut into small pieces to fit on a fork. Enough said, and to hell with the Italians. They didn't even invent pizza after all.
