The Soviets made larger nuclear weapons because their delivery systems were far less accurate than the AMericans, so they felt the need to compensate for the possibility of a bomb aimed for New York exploding in New Jersey.
The largest tested was the "Tzar Bomba" a 50 Megaton behemoth. A similar design, that was never tested, could produce 100 Megatons. In Russia it is called, "Kuzka's Mother."
For comparison the largest nuke made by the US was the b-41 warhead. It was tested at 15 megatons, but a never tested design would produce 25 megatons.

The sun? The USSR developed a 100 megaton bomb "Czar Bomba" but it was impractical to use. They did detonate a 57 megaton bomb and the shockwave went around the world THREE times! It's on Wikipedia!

On a special I viewed it mentioned 300 mega ton warheads fitted to icbm's. Man will always find a way to destroy rather than construct as it is in his nature to do so.
