Perhaps more details next time.

If you're copying audio from a CD, use RealPlayer to copy them.

If you're downloading audio and playing them, then there's nothing you can do about it unless you find another.

Flux.

The best CD ripping software is Exact Audio Copy. It reads the CD multiple times to ensure a perfect rip or as close to perfect as possible. Works wonders on scratched CDs.
The best codec is the LAME MP3 encoder. It's free, just download it and unzip it with winzpip, winrar or any zip utility. Then install EAC and either let EAC find it or just point out where LAME is. LAME is just a codec and needs software like EAC to use it. The latest version is LAME 3.97 and can be found at SourceForge.net.
EAC can use most codecs, like Gogo and BladeEnc, but LAME is the best in my opinion.
As a rule, the higher the bitrate the better. 128kbps, for example is standard in M$ Media Player and is about the level of a cassette tape. Always choose the highest bitrate available.
Another facet is Constant Bit Rate vs. Variable Bit Rate.
With constant bitrate, the encoder stays at whatever the setting is. 128kbps will encode at a constant 128kbps. This results in constant file size, 2-3MB fles will be fairly clost to the same size. Variable is just that, variable. The encoder will encode some portions at 128, others will be lower. Ever notice parts of a song that really rock while other parts are quieter? The rocking parts are ripped at the max settings while the quieter part will ripped at lower bitrates. The quieter parts don't need the higher bitrates as there is less info to rip. This makes for odd file sizes of course but they are almost always smaller. The highest setting in LAME is full CD quality in VBR.
For more info, try afterdawn.com and doom9.org for more in-depth info. This where the guru's hang out.
Good luck.

The LAME encoder produces excellent results and is free. However, to make it user-friendly, you really need to use a visual interface. Check out RazorLame.

If you don't want to bother with all that, just use Windows Media Player.

Whatever you use, be sure to keep the bit rate high. I'd say 192 Kbps is the minimum. Or use VBR (variable bit rate) at a high quality setting (available in LAME)

A very good cd ripper is CDEX. It supports variable bit rate as well as fixed rate and can rip cds to the hard drive in a variety of formats. You can query the CDDB (CD database) so it fills in the artist/album/song fields if they are available.
