If there were 2 versions of the same hummus brand, and one version had potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate artificial preservatives in it and it cost $2.99 for 1lb., how much more would you be willing to pay for a version of the same hummus that had no artificial preservatives in it?

Here are the choices:

a) I would pay $3.99 for the hummus with no preservatives.

b) I would pay $3.49 for the hummus with no preservatives.

c) I would buy the one that was least expensive.

[NOTE: I am doing a marketing research paper on ethnic foods, and I am trying to understand price elasticity in natural products versus ones with preservatives. Your answers and any feedback you care to give me would be greatly appreciated!]

Happy eating!

This survey is flawed.

You will receive responses that are not directed more at the cost aspect, more than toward preservatives vs. preservative-free hummus.

Many of the answers you get will be based on price alone, since most people do not like hummus enough to pay 3.99 for it. Honestly, I can make about 5 pounds of top-quality hummus for that much money.

The question you should ask to avoid convoluted response would be, "If a store had hummus, would the inclusion of preservatives in each brand be a deciding factor in which you'd choose, given they were all the same price; and if you were willing to pay extra for preservative free, how much extra would you pay?"

I would pay more than $3.99 for the preservative free hummus. I DO NOT eat any preservatives, chemicals or pesticides...period. (along with a big list of other things I don't eat that are harmful to the body). I sometimes buy a brand of all natural raw salsa at my local grocery store...it's called "Sister's Salsa". Get this: it's $6.99. Outrageous. But, if I'm in a rush, and can't make my own, I'll spend the dough. Go figure.

For 3.49 or 3.99, I would just buy the ingredients and make my own. But if had to choose, I would choose the least expensive brand.
Good luck on your paper!

I would make my own as it is so easy...... basically chick peas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini. That way you know what it contains.
