How does one deal with prodding people who always tell you that you "need" a bigger car, bigger this, bigger that? Our family car seats 4 people comfortably and we don't care for "big" things. We are happy with what we have, not what society and television commercials tell us we "need".

I think you should thank them for their input and point out that as you're an adult, you're quite capable of making your own decisions, to suit the lifestyle that you are leading and/or want. You could say this calmly and respectfully, and then change the subject - talk about the kids, or the job, for example.

If you wanted to go further, you could point out that bigger does not necessarily mean better - for a vehicle you could ( if you know the particulars) mention that a smaller vehicle may be more fuel efficient thereby saving money and also being more environmentally friendly than most of those huge ugly (in my opinion) SUVs. Your car fits your budget and lifestyle...why get something that you really don't need?

You can also mention "marketing" which is what advertisers do in order to sell their products - they "create" a demand for the product via commercials which 'brainwash' most of the public to believe that by buying this product they can attain a certain status, standing or magnetism. So, you mention that as you're not a victim of marketing, you can clear-headedly make the relevant decisions in living YOUR life.

Please note that you do not have to explain your decisions to anyone really. Just thank them as in the first paragraph and change the subject. If they keep on hammering away at you, just politely, and coldly, close the conversation and move away from that person. Invent an important errand, or appointment, or someone you really MUST talk to in that little group over there by the water fountain. You get the idea? These people are being rude, even if they do mean well, but you don't have to lower yourself to their level.

Hope this helps

I can't stand when people interfere and try to tell you what you "need". Only one person knows whats best for you/your family and that's you. I mean society soschmeity. Everything is constantly getting bigger and better...no one can afford to keep up. I say if your comfortable with what you have, thats all that matters, and anyone who tells you otherwise can F off.

Stare blankly (and coldly) and ask, "Why on earth would you say something like that?" Make sure they realize they have crossed the boundaries of polite society into taking on your business dear. Stick to your values!

If you're talking about the media telling you want you need the answer is very simple.....don't pay attention, people do it everyday.

If you're talking about people in your life....you simply say "we have what we need and we're happy but thanks for the input"....try it it works very well.
