Iron was believed to be the strongest metal and therefore an 'iron string' would be immutable, strong and would cause a deep vibration (think tuning fork). Emerson intimates that an individual's nature/personality is the strongest part to influence a person's heart. Heart also has implications for not only the physical body but sits within this text as referring to our spiritual and emotional sides.
Therefore by knowing and trusting one's thinking and intuition/personal wisdom, you are resonating with the 'iron string' of your nature that vibrates your 'heart'.
