It is always best to pay it before it reaches your credit. Get it in writing that they will not report the debt as a paid collection once you pay it or else it will still destroy your credit. Your credit score does not consider a paid collection better than an outstanding so it will not help to have it paid unless you are looking to get a big loan, such as a home loan.

yes of course, because eventually the collection agency will report that to your credit bureau and that will destroy your credit. your credit score can drop from a 640 to a 580 with that just one collection when they report it.

if the last payment on that bill is under 7 years i would not waste your time, if not i would take care of them before they put that on your record, they dont even nee your SSN#. if you have a bad credit score just do as you please! but if you are in good credit standing pay it and you will say thousands in the furture

It depends on the date of the debt. Check the length below, if the statute of limitations has passed for your state, it is a moral issue. If the statute of limitations has not passed, you ought to pay in full before the company sues you. If you pay in partial, you can lengthen the statute of limitations and you will remind them of the debt (and that they can sue you).
