You can use the everyday items but you can also do baskets, a vase of flowers, a painting hung on your backsplash anything you can put in another room can be used in the kitchen... it doesn't have to be just a kitchen item. Use some bright colors too. My friend has masks,wooden things like scupltures with an afican theme kinda,it's rich and warm and very beautiful. Her kitchen is browns/oranges/bieges with hints of yellow and the black counter tops just make it unbelievable. We shopped Pier 1 and simular places to pull the look together.
Do something unexspected for accessories and have fun!

Canisters are not only decorative,but piratical. Various sized clear containers, filled with different types of pasta look attractive. A large decorative bowl ,or basket, filled with fruit always looks beautiful and may encourage your friends to indulge.

Sugar containers, salt and pepper holders that are decrative, or a cookie jar.
Also consider what kind of strainer you need next to the sink, a theme will make your area very unique.

of course the things you will need to use....but instead of a canister set(matchy, matchy) just find complimentary containers to hold diff supplies.......check ikea.....also candles....cutting board...bowl with fruit (I also have a small bowl with dog treats for my puppy) plants, pics....the skiy is the limit
