Coughing is an action the body takes to get rid of substances that are irritating the air passages. A cough is usually initiated to clear a buildup of phlegm in the trachea.
Frequent or chronic coughing usually indicates the presence of a disease. You stated that you are a non-smoker, but there are other causes of a chronic dry cough which can include post-nasal drip, gastroesophageal reflux disease, asthma, and drugs; such as beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin. Post viral bronchial hyperresponsiveness and habitual cough are a possibility too. Coughing can happen voluntarily as well as involuntarily.

Coughs can be treated with cough medicines. Dry coughs are treated with cough suppressants (antitussives) that suppress the body's urge to cough, while productive coughs (coughs that produce phlegm) are treated with expectorants that loosen mucus from the respiratory tract. Mucinex which can be bought over the counter is an excellent expectorant, as well as medicines with guaifenesin. Also depending on where you live and the type of heat that you have the air in your house may be dry which can cause coughing. If this is the case try using a humidifier in your house or in the room where you sleep to put moisture in the air. Sucking on hard candies helps too. I find that peppermint works especially well.

When a cough lasts for more than a few weeks multiple causes may be likely. Therefore if you haven't already I would suggest that you see your primary care physician. You should probably have a chest x-ray too to make sure nothing else is going on in your lungs.

Good luck.

I've had a cough since November; it is just now getting less and less. I have had to resort to using cough drops when a cough spasm starts. I have heard many people talk about this coughing, so I guess it just caught up with me. Especially if I am in a dry room; then, the tickle starts, and at night, when trying to sleep. I keep cough drops at my bedside. Good luck.
