Quinolones are a group of antimicrobial drugs. (In the strictest sense, they are not antibiotics as they are not derived from a micro organism, but produced synthetically)

The oldest quinolone in use is nalidixic acid, which is used to treat urinary tract infections.

The most popular group in the category are the fluoroquinolones- Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, norfloxacin, Pefloxacin , sparfloxacin, gatifloxacin etc.

They are noted for being very effective with relatively few side effects.
