Anything that disrupts the normal functioning of the stomach may be associated with a feeling of nausea.

One of the most common causes of a stomach upset is infection. This may be accompanied by fever, sore throat, muscle aches, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea.

Food that hasn't been stored or prepared properly and has become contaminated is one way that the viruses and bacteria get into the body causing food poisoning. Another is when cold viruses are spread by coughing or sneezing where an upset stomach may be one of the symptoms.

Stomach acid

Too much alcohol, hot and spicy foods, and smoking all cause too much acid to be produced, which irritates the stomach lining. If the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed then this causes an upset stomach, usually with indigestion pains. Anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen can irritate the lining of the stomach too.

Stress and anxiety

Another cause of too much acid being produced is stress and anxiety. This may also cause feelings of nausea and be accompanied by sweating, heart palpitations and the need to pass water or open the bowels frequently.

These upset stomachs are usually short-lived and don't need anything more than rest, non-fizzy liquids, and an antacid to settle them if the upset stomach keeps happening. But, it's important to get it checked out by your doctor. It may be something more serious such as a stomach ulcer that needs medicine to heal it.

Problems with the organs in the abdominal region i.e. the digestive system, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix and kidney could be the main reasons for a bad stomach ache. Gastroenteritis can give you a severe stomach ache, while stomach pain from cancer may only be mild. I take iron tablets for anaemia and they do cause stomach upset. I have also tried iron in liquid form and that had the same effect. My periods were always regular as clockwork but recently they have been late ......as much as 5 to 7 days. I even did a pregnancy test a couple of months ago as like yourself I was doubtful. It was negative and I put the irregularity down to the anaemia.
