Light colours will give the impression of a larger area, and gold will work (i had a gold bedroom). It will work.

It is a myth that dark colors make a room look smaller. Dark colors can have a dramatic affect and a room can look just as large painted dark blue as it would painted light blue. The thing you need to watch out for is the molding you use in the room. If you paint a room a dark color and use white or light molding or have a white or light door frame then the contrast will cause the room to appear smaller. If you go dark you'll want the molding and door frame to match. However, dark colors show dirt more. Just something to consider. I don't think you'll have any problems with gold. Another thing to consider is to only paint one wall gold. Pick the largest or most prominent wall. Then just be sure to include gold accents in the rest of your decor. I had a friend who painted one wall of her living room a wine red. The rest she left white. Her furniture was cream but she bought really gorgeous, wine red accent pillows--some with stripes.
Be careful with mirrors. Depending on the room they don't always help make a space look bigger. You have to use them in the right space and the right way. Use artwork and photos on the walls to make the room look bigger.
I have other ideas but I'd have to see your room and have more of an idea of your style and what you are trying to do.

As a rule, light colors make a room look larger. White, offwhite, pale yellow. Also try installing floor-length mirrors in your bedroom, like on your closet door. The mirrors will give the appearance of more space.

Gold paint would make your room look like you are royalty. Just like the crown air freshener in your car ! Try using two colors separated by a chair rail. This will make the room look taller. No one color can make a room appear larger.

The lighter the shade, the larger the room will look. Adding big mirrors also make a room appear larger as well.

Lighter colors make rooms look larger. That doesn't mean a room can't look cozy or comfortable with darker colors but bigger means lighter colors. I like deep colors like burgundy, browns, deep lavenders. It depends on what you have for furnishings and the style you like. You can use two colors, One wall one color the rest another. Look through magazines and see what appeals to you. Be brave and go with something you are afraid to go with and you will love it, really!

Since you rent your option to paint or use mirrors is somewhat limited. You might ask your landlord about painting the room. If you give them the option to approve of your color choice they might let you paint. As others have suggested, you might try putting the dresser inside the closet. You might also consider raising your bed so that you can put the craft boxes under the bed. You can get inexpensive full length mirrors. You might mount the full length mirrors on the closet doors using easy to remove adhesives like "Command Adhesive".
