If you buy a new TV watch out. Dec.31 2006 was supposed to be the end of analog broadcasting but that's been pushed back to Feb. 2009. So if buying a new TV make it a digital.

I'd get a new TV. If you want a medium TV, like 27-36 inches, go CRT. If you want a larger TV, in the 40's, go LCD. But bigger than 50, DLP is the way to go. We got a 50 inch Samsung for only $1299 (on sale).

I say getting the estimate, and then the picture tube, I'd go for a new LCD tv and apply the cost of the estimate and the tube towards a new TV. After you replace the tube then the electronics will go out.

first off, how do you know the picture tube is going out as you say? I have heard that about a million times from customers saying there picture tube is going out when it ha nothing to do with the tube. Did you have a technician look at it? If not I would have a good tech come out and give you an estimate

It's much better to buy a new tv, than having the old one repaired. Even if you do get the tv repaired, you're still stuck with a 2 1/2 years old tv.
