think of something special: your bf's favorite hobby, your first date, etc....
i.e. if he plays drums get one of those cheap small bongos and write on the canvas "my heart would beat if you'd go to formal with me."
or for a guitarist: write out a sample TAB sheet and work into it "rock my world and go to formal with me"
or if your first date was at the beach: do a message in a bottle of sand and seashells asking him to formal
