I am working on increasing my pull-ups and push-ups, and I do use weights as well.

After about 20 minutes of various upper-body exercises, my muscles are so fatigued, lifting a water bottle takes 2 hands.

Is this better for muscle growth, or is it better to stop 20 or so reps after?

if you are adding too many reps per day your body might be too worn out. you might want to start increasing slowly,like 1 or 2 more per day. if that is what your doing already then i suggest you cut back so you body can build up some energy again. I added 20m reps to my workout per day and i started having fainting spells.

Fatigue....usually on the last set. Use common sense, though, don't do squats to fatigue without a good spotter.

Here is my thoughts on this;

If it hurts after you do the exercises, that is OK.
If it hurts the next day, and especially DAYS afterwards, that is NOT OK. You have damaged your muscles.
Lift lighter next time, after the pain completely goes away.
NEVER push thru the pain.

Lift every OTHER day. Muscles grow stronger when they are resting, not during the lifting.
