big dogs as well. They dont discriminate!!! NO two dogs are the same so why generalize them like that? I have a small dog that is MUCH better behaved than most big dogs and easier to play with and funnier!

I think they do discriminate. I think a lot of little dog owners feel the same way about big dogs (not liking them). It is a matter of preference but isn't your question generalizing and it does sound as though you prefer small dogs over large dogs. You are after all comparing your dog to others big dogs. I do not believe I have ever met a little dog better behaved then my big dogs ( I am talking about the average pet owner) most of the owners of small dogs that I know let their little dogs do whatever they want and their dogs are annoying little pest that never leave anyone alone. I personally do not think that a pesky dog is funny. I own both big and little dogs. I do like both but it is usually the small dog owners that annoy me.

Beacuse if you are going to have a dog, have a DOG!!!! The little dogs, especially the "teacup" things are useless as far as dogs go. TOTALLY. What do they offer that a cat can't??????
They do not house train easily, they yap, they shiver....do I need to go on????? REAL dogs DO things. Swim, pull things, hunt...there are MANY breeds that have a PURPOSE!!!! Other were bred for NO REASON other than being. When you think of dogs, you don't think of a little yappy Chihuahua that is wearing clothing and being carried in a little backpack!!!! You think of a dog running after a ball or a frisbee.
Yeah a Chi is easier to play with. You can sit on your butt on the couch and toss a little, little ball for it three times and exercise is OVER!!!! A REAL DOG lets you get out in all weather and do something....without having to worry about putting a snowsuit on it or having it freeze to death!!!!!!!!

And little dog people like big dogs because of "dog envy". Most of them WISH they could have a REAL dog. Sadly, many are in those "under 25#" apartments that make them PRETEND to like little dogs.

Anyone who has a mental block to another size or breed is just a status seeker or they have never been exposed to the other type and rely on hear say. We recently got a Chihuahua after years of large Labs, and it took only about 1 month for the guys to fall in love ( but still not in public:)
Small dogs are constant companions, not so independant.

My 82 lb. lab/hound mix loves little dogs. He's just fascinated by them for some reason. He gets along a lot better with small dogs too. I guess because they don't seem like such a threat? Maybe it's because he HATES when other dogs (usually big dogs) try to mount him....I think it hurts his hips...he has hip dysplasia.
More to your point, I think people tend to dislike small dogs is because a lot of them tend to be yippy and have a Napoleon complex.

We have a medium sized dog (a staffyx) and he is always well behave around other dogs. But the little yappers all bark like crazy when they see him like they want a piece of him. There is one woman I see when out walking who has a chihuahua and her dog goes off! Then SHE has the cheek to look at me like I have no right to be walking my dog at the same time as her. I do the right thing and cross the road when I see her and make sure I have a good grip on his lead but she makes no effort to control her yap dog.
I'll tell you something else I have noticed, People with tiny dogs treat them like they are children, but owners of regular sized dogs treat then like dogs. Newsflash, they ARE dogs not people.

I don't find that to be true.
Personally,I prefer big dogs but have owned dogs of all sizes.
There are certain breeds of small dogs that just get on my nerves but it's the owners fault and not the dogs as they think it's a form of exercise to let the animals bark all day or that it's cute when their poodle hikes it's leg on yours or the Shih-tzu who attacks tennis shoes regardless of whose wearing them.

I grew up in a house hold with a mix of small and large dogs and the only ones i had to watch as a kid were the small ones. Most small breeds were originally bred with a purpose in mind eg rat catcher but how many do get used for that purpose. Whereas lots of large dogs are still used for purposes similar to the ones they were bred for. In the wild the runt of the litter was the first to die if times got tough so why deliberatly breed them now for teacup pooches, they are inferior dogs. I have also noticed that small dogs also have fairly similar personalities due to the purpose they were bred for and i just prefer the mentality of larger dogs. Rat catchers have to be fast and snap fast or they miss it. I like individual small dogs but i dont like them in general. There are also some breeds of large dog i dont like but i like individuals. Then again there are breeds i like but i dont like individuals. My 4 large dogs 80-100lbs are very well behaved easy to handle and great to play with because i can be as rough as i like and i can cuddle them with out worrying that they will break. My medium springer spaniel is the noisiest of the bunch and i love her but i prefer my doberman or my bull arab.

Well, people own what they like.

I've seen many small dog owners who dislike large dogs. So it isn't only large dog owners who tend to dislike anything different.

But I think it is mainly due to the masculinity of it all. Large dogs are tougher, and stronger, in the eyes of many people. And little dogs are needy and whine a lot. So large dog owners often feel that small dogs arn't as good, that they're not like "real" dogs.

It's all totally false. But some people are opinionated.

I have a big dog and like little dogs too. I often meet folks who would never consider a big dog and con't understand why I have one the size of a pony. Folks are more swayed by their stereotypes of big and small dog people and dogs than the animals themselves.

Actually, I honestly prefer big dogs, probably because I'm a big person, but I have a black lab, a lab/collie mix, and a Shih Tzu, so I pretty much have a big dog, a little dog, and one right inbetween, and I love them ALL to BITS!!
