well, if it looked cloudy and smelled horrible, i wouldn't use it!

yes, but it does take a long time for it to happen....Once opened, however, you should use up an oil in four to six months. If your pantry shelf consistently gets warmer than 72 to 80 degrees, you should consider storing the oil in the refrigerator. Oils may become cloudy in the refrigerator because they are closer to the temperature at which they become solid (saturated fats harden at higher temperatures than unsaturated fats do). This doesn't pose any safety problem, howeveróthe oil usually clears after it reaches room temperature again, and no harm is done.

Cloudy and smells bad, yes it has had the lid off or some thing drooped into it. But if olive oil is kept in a sealed clean container it will never go off, my olive oil is not around long enough to go bad

Yes, it gets rancid. It will turn cloudy and smell bad.
