Take away the fact that it plainly states that in the Bible for Christians, and look at it from a practical point of view, both in ancient times and now.
Think back to those times, we've all seen the Discovery Channel, and tell me if you think a woman would have been able to command the authority necessary to build a brand new religion from a bunch of Jewish men?
Now flash forward a couple of thousand years and I'll ask you a similar question: Do you honestly think a woman can command the authority necessary to run a thriving church from all the men in the congregation?
The fact is that men, at their base core, cannot submit completely to a woman, any woman. Not when it comes to religion, which is the core base for a true believer to build his life upon. They just can't do it, they aren't built that way. There will always be this silent antagonism between the sexes, and God has already proclaimed man to be the winner lol. (although not necessarily the best, God bless 'em lol)
So the answer is no, they cannot rule the church, and yes, it is derived from ancient tradition because of a biological problem men have lol.

The Bible teaches that a woman shall not take a place of authority over a man. This does not mean however that women cannot have their ministries and teach, there are many fine christian women doing this very thing. It just means that a woman can not be an authority figure in the church. I have learned much from women evangelists and watch many of their programs. I believe this is part of the curse that God put on women after Eve sinned by eating the fruit and causing Adam to do so as well. I know many Godly women and at times I struggle with this as well. The bottom line is it is Gods Word and I suppose I will have to wait until I meet him to find out all the answers to all my questions. Don't lose heart over this, God used many great women in the Bible to accomplish His will. And God still uses women today to accomplish His will. God Bless You

1 Timothy 2:12-14
"But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. "
The Apostle Paul's instructions here gives 2 reasons.
First it was simply the order in which man and woman were created.
Second, it is because Eve was deceived. Adam also sinned, but the idea here was Eve was tricked and confused between right and wrong.
You may or may not agree with or understand these reasons, but this takes this out of the culture of Paul's day. His reasons go all the way back to creation.
Also, just because men and women have different roles, that does not mean one is more important than the other. I know many churches where the women add strength, encouragement, love, faith, fellowship, and stability even though they aren't a preacher, deacon, or elder.

Well, in Christianity it says, "Women should be silent in the church" and "Women should not teach over man" Also the bible talks about what a preacher/pastor and a Bishop and an Elder needs to be, and it is Married, with kids to a women, one wife to be exact.
So this would leave out non married priests also. The bible says (paraphrasing) 'how can a man lead a church when he can't lead a family?' Makes sense to me.

Do you want to be a Pope, or Bishop, etc. etc. Probably not. It is just a reason to not believe in God. Jesus treated women and children very well, in His day the custom was women were 2nd class citizens. That was the historical custom of the day, it was not God ordained. What do you do in your Church? There are many ways for women to service in the Church.

Every religion will have it's different reasons, so I can only give you the perspective that I have of mine.
In my religion women do hold various positions of leadership in important "callings" but the priesthood is offered to all worthy males.
I've been taught that this is because women are naturally born with special gifts and abilities to love and nurture and men need these priesthood responsibilities to have the chance to serve and learn how to love and nurture as well as women.
Seriously, womanhood is something we hold very sacred, and guys don't put us down in my church, they look up to our nurturing qualities, and are striving to be more like us.

It is matter of respecting God's arrangement.
1 Corinthians 11:3 "But I want YOU to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God." (God being the highest, Jesus, man, then woman).
1 Timothy 2:12,13 "I do not permit a woman to teach, or to exercise authority over a man, but to be in silence. For Adam was formed first, then Eve."
