In my experience, Hindus love celebrating holidays, and they don't have to be "Hindu" holidays for them to get into the spirit!

Many Hindus take a very broad and inclusive approach to religion and spirituality. Hinduism generally doesn't have the same paranoia about other faiths some some monotheistic religions have.

Hindus celebrate a variety of holidays, depending on which deities they're particularly devoted to, but Diwali is probably one of the most popular. See the link below for some of the others.

He would'nt be insulted if you would sincerely show interest and ask him. Main Hindu holidays are Holi, Diwali, Navratri, Dusshera, Krishna - Janmashtmi, Ganesh Chaturthi etc. there are plenty more, but these are a few main ones, it also depend on what kind of Hindu he is ? and whether how stictly they follow it ?
