Both arts are Japanese. Aikido was created from Ju Jitsu in the 1920s but wasn't named Aikido until the 40s, much like Judo was in 1882...

Ju Jitsu is mainly ground fighting it's take downs are very limited and although it does incorperate some striking/weapons defence.
Aikido is designed to specifically focuss on attacks with and without weapons. It also incorperates some weapons training as well.
I would choose Aikido over Ju Jitsu in this case, much better for self defence. Now adays Ju Jitsu is mainly focussed on as a competative art so alot of the techniques are not taught in many dojos. That and with the UFC being so popular... Are you gonna be getting all the techniques or just the basics that MMA fighters use. Aikido like Judo has very much stuck to teaching the proper techniques to everyone which means you know you are getting what you are paying for. Keep in mind however Aikido is more dificult to learn than Ju Jitsu but definatly will pay off more in the end...
Although if Judo is an option it would be great as well seeing as it is the art most trained in by police and military around the world. And was proven better in fighting than Ju Jitsu when 13 out of 15 Judo fighters beat Ju Jitsu fighter when the head of the Ju Jitsu academy in Japan challenged the founder of Judo (Jigoro Kano) to a tournament at the Tokyo police games. It incorperates all the same submissionas and adds over 60 different throwing techniques as well. It is not a Gentler form of Ju Jitsu it is a more efficient form...

13 years of training in Judo, 5 years Freestyle wrestling

A well trained Aikido black belt will be able to defend himself. As will a well trained Ju Jitsu black belt. Taking a couple of lessons in either one will get you killed.

You don't want to hear that both are best, but the truth is that the techniques learned in any martial art will prepare you for certain situations but not all of them. The problem with these questions is there are too many variables. What if I do this? What if you do that? Are there weapons? Why are you being attacked? A person who wants your wallet for drugs is going to be an entirely different situation than a guy in a bar who thinks you looked at his girlfriend the wrong way.

What really makes martial arts techniques work, no matter what style you practice is the element of surprise. If your opponent doesn't know your style, he will attack in a certain way. If he does know your style, he will likely alter his attack so as to avoid your techniques. This is why you often hear of martial artists from one school going to another school and getting their butts kicked. First of all, their ego probably got in the way of common sense. Second, the students knew what their style was and were able to counter it.

There are bouncers who have never had a day of martial arts training in their lives, but they can defend themselves against many different situations because they take what their opponent gives them and use it to their advantage. This is the essence of both Aikido and Ju Jitsu.

The biggest difference between the two is that Aikido is the lesser aggressive discipline.

it uses the opponent's strength against him and can work in your favor to submit an opponent without committing yourself too much in the fight. Traditional Aikido is not practical yes, but that's where you have to discard the tradtional trappings and look at it's base techniques in a more practical manner.

Traditional Aikido is not direct and to the point, but it has the same result when used PROPERLY.

Jujitsu is more aggressive and uses similar techniques as that of Aikido (throws, joint locks etc) but it focuses more on the ground fighting side of a fight whereas Aikido can work on both sides of the fight in both the standing side and the ground side if necessary.

it's not a question of which is better in a self defense situation, it's more of how would YOU use the techniques you've learned in a self defense situation, be cause in a fight; it's gonna move quickly, and you want to resolve the fight as quickly as possible.

Aikido can do that, but in a non aggressive manner (like only having to use a pain compliance or joint locking technique to stop your opponent without doing them serious injury), Jujitsu will also do it, but you'd better plan on gettin' dirty, because more than likely, you're gonna be on the ground for a fair amount of time.

and in a multiple attacker situation, that can be dangerous; especially to you.

Jujutsu was (possibly continues to be) the name given to the formal Japanese Martial arts and combat systems. From the art of Jujutsu, certain techniques were selected and also elaborated to specific focuses named Karate, Judo, and Aikido.

Sports were formed from Jujutsu because the Ryu competitions often resulted in severe injury (death matches).

Judo was originally a set number of techniques taken from Jujutsu that do not critically injure the opponent generally speaking. This is because the competitions are now in the name of sport and the competitors already each normally posses sufficient Ukemi skills (breakfalls) to where impact is lessened.

When a person is accomplished at many of the throwing techniques they decide how hard the opponent hits the ground when properly applied.

Jujutsu involves locks, chokes, breaks, throws, strikes, takedowns, and etc.

Aikido represents the softer styles of Jujutsu. Circular motions similar to some of the Chinese martial arts. Aikido is an important focus to consider because a line is countered with a curved line or circle.

Aikido is an essential element of Japanese Jujutsu and the ideas and fundamentals are an integral part of well balanced combat systems.

Aikido can involve much meditation though is in no way impractical. A Judo expert can easily defeat a larger opponent though some of the techniques do require a certain amount of strength to utilize.

Aikido turns attackers own force in addition to their momentum against them requiring little or no effort to excersize many of its techiques.

Thanks.

The Answer is Ju Jitsu!

Aikido will not work in reality! … at least if the attacker is not totally drunk or a complete idiot!
If you have a dangerous man attacking you, Aikido will not help you at all!

And forget about the bullshit about Aikido is using the opponents force against him etc.
All martial arts do this somehow!

Ju jitsu is a more extreme version of judo. Judo is like a more washed down version of jujitsu.(i.e less dangerous techniques) Ju jitsu was used by samurais so it was tested in combat many times. BJJ focuses on ground fighting but traditional ju jitsu(one used by samurais) incorporate joint locks, throwing, and striking as well.

Aikido technique is more of a theory as far as I see it. the techniques are representation of its theories and I highly doubt its effectiveness in reality situation.

Loaded question. The way its framed doesn't allow for any qualifiers of which there are many.

I know you are looking for a quick and easy answer, but there isn't a single answer - way to many variables to consider

Short list might be:
You
Your Fellow Students
Your Teachers
Your School - more artistic or more martial?

Its not the style itself as much as it is the people involved that matters.

Honestly..if I am "allowed" to give my OWN OPINION..I will have to go with "WUSHU ARTS"...I believe that this Magical Defense Class, is "Hiding" its beauty in the DARK corners of the WORLD!
Which is why plenty of individuals do not know its name, or are familiar with its strengths...I believe YOU can see a little of it, in The "Jet Li's Fearless Movie" and learn more of it online..I have been practicing this Art for 11 years...I can straight up assure you Speed, Strength, Agility, POWER, and "Intimidation" to your Enemies!...=) E-Mail me to learn more*

Ju Jitsu is very Beautiful...How you handle your footwork, your mental issues, and control...UNVELIAVABLE...but I guess it depends on the "Individual" and their "Strengths" in certain Areas...Hope You enjoy every ART of Self-Defense! Because ALL of them are GOOD in my book...it is up to us to make it the "BEST"...*wink*
