The moral lesson would be to listen to God. I think God did not want the Jewish nation intermarrying with pagan nations. He had to keep the heritage pure for Christ. There were some nasty pagan customs in those days. Check out ttb.org. This radio pastor is doing a 5yr study of the entire bible. Right now he is in the gospel of Luke but once that is finished I think he will be doing the book of Numbers.

Moses had assumed that they would kill all the males and adult women. this would ensure that the Israelites would not again be corrupted by the Midianites. The command was severe but necessary in light of the morally depraved Midianite customs and the Hebrew tendency to adapt to other religions, thus adulterating the worship of God.

You choose heavy verses.
The moral revolves around the intimacy of the sexual act and the sacred - however a given culture may define it. Moses eliminated any Midianite (His wife's people) w/ a knowledge of that connection.
The validity can be checked out in Solomon who was led away to other sacral acts/gods by his other wives.
The reality can be seen in our advertisement industry where "sex sells". For the Midianites, it sold corruption amongst the Israelites. For Americans, it sells everything from lawn mowers to washing machines to televisions...depending where we are willing to put our allegiance/attention/bucks.
It is a powerful moral which religion forgets by "hiding" sex and which society exploits by using sex to redefine religion/value systems.
