On his last visit to the vet, my cat (Gimano) weighed in at 12 pounds. I think that is a little too much for a 1 year old. Gimano is a California Spangled mix. Cats of that breed have an average weight of 9-18 pounds, but I still would like him to lose weight. We tried putting him on a diet plan for animals, but he still remains the same on the scale. Any suggestions?

Gimano has at least 2-3 hours of active exercise per day. He is leash trained, and goes for walks once a day if possible. We feed him Meow Mix dry and Friskies canned cat food.

Don't feed him Meow Mix, its full of artificial fillers. Feed him an all natural cat food, like Natural Balance or Natural Choice...It's what I recommend to everyone who comes into the pet store I work at. And I also feed Natural Balance to my kittens. Its full of protein and all the necessary ingredients your cat needs. Canned cat food can be a good break for your cats if they mainly eat dry food, but maybe cut back on it and I would also suggest the Natural Balance or Natural Choice canned food as well. They are both all natural and help maintain the kittie's weight and improves skin and fur appearance. Let him eat when he wants, he's still a kitten. I have a continuous feeder for my six month old kittens, don't cut back on his meals just because you want him to lose extra weight, just don't feed him bad cat food, feed him healthy food and you will notice a difference- better skin/fur, healthier, better digestion, more energy, etc. I highly recommend these brands.

My cat has 17lb. An 1 1/2 ago she weighed 19lb.
In order to help Gimano lose weight, first -let him spend more time outside- if possible. If not , you will have to play more with him. He might also be a little bit depressed. He probably misses you too much during the day, or worse, days might pass by and he doesn't receive attention that he aspects. Second, feed him only 4-5-6 oz of food. I personally, use a combination of Royal Canine (Light 34) with Royal Canine hairball, Promise, and Nature Choice ( weight management formula. I also think that is important to feed them with as much natural products as possible- even organic where available. I know is a lot , but I will do anything to keep her happy, and fed.
The weight loss for cats is a time issue. It really takes time and patience.
Good luck to you!

Did the vet mention his weight? If so then I'd suggest IAMS indoor formula with weight control. If the vet did not mention the cat's weight then I'd not do this. Just let him eat regular quality food like IAMS or Science Diet....no kit n kaboodle or Friskies which is just crap food for cats....I have a very large boned, male Ragdoll who's huge but that's in his DNA to be that size. At one year of age I'd say the cat is about done growing so that would put his weight well within the normal range for that breed.

did your vet say Gimano is heavy? 12 pounds for a cat that normally weighs betweens 9-18 pounds would then mean he's on the low end of the weight scale and is fine. Trying to make a healthy cat lose weight can cause other serious health problems and shorten Gimano's life. If you are not sure have your vet identify this before putting him on a weight loss plan since a vet needs to guide you carefully so your cat's liver doesn't shut down, which is called fatty liver disease common to cats who are put on diets.

Tips i have are:
*try playing with your cat, let her run after a toy, that helps
*Try giving your cat a little less food
*Clean out the litter box, if the cat doesn't poo, it will be fat
*Another reason, once you cat is done using the potty, check to see if he ate it, it happens and you can't help it, that extra food might be the cause of the weight gaining
*Their are types of food for cats that let them gain less weight, they are sold at petco or petsmart, other general pet stores DO NOT have them though.
*Your cat shopuld move around more. Is he the coach potato type of cat?
I hope these help. One more thing, IAMS DIET CAT FOOD, works real great! And it is really healthy for cats!

take your cat for a walk-even if it's just inside the house. Many cats learn to enjoy walking on a leash, especially if trained while still young. It's a great excuse for you to get more exercise, too. When your cat is begging for treats, it could be that she's just begging for your attention. Substitute play, grooming, stroking or conversation for food treats as expressions of love. You can also try catnip as a non-food treat.Play fetch. Toss dry food kibbles to your cat, one piece at time, to combine exercise with mealtime.

in your question you stated that the average weight for that particular breed is 9-18 pounds. it seems that 12 lbs would be normal for a young tom cat. did the vet suggest he diet? if not then he is at a weight that is good for his age and bone structure
