You can just buy the software in a cd. Windows Vista comes in cds to install. No need to get a new computer.

The marketing people for computers and software would love it if you chucked your old system and purchased a new system with the Windows Vista pre-installed. From the articles i have read about the MS Vista, it will require more of a machine to run it well than is required for MS XP.

I have several operating systems in my home network, i have always been a MS Windows fan, however, i am seriously considering going to a Linux based system.

To answer you question directly, yes Microsoft IS coming out with new software to replace MS Win XP, no they will not be able to run together, you might be able to have a dual booting system. As long as you have a machine that meets the minimum requirements, you won't need to purchase a new one.

When Windows Vista comes out, Microsoft (based on past releases) will continue to support XP for at least the next three years. So there is no need to immediately switch. Also, if you check the specs on your PC (assuming it is less then 3 years old) it may be able to run Vista. So if/when you upgrade you may be able to do it without replacing the computer.

Windows XP will still be supported for a while after Vista comes out, you don't need to upgrade immediately.
