They weren't, really.
The emporer of Japan was under the age of 10 at the time. The real imperialists were the military cast ruling Manchuria at the time.

cincinatti got it right,it was to gain raw materials(mostly metals) to be able to support thier military might,they didnt get far with it and it was the sanctions brought upon Japan through the US that led to pearl harbor,because Japan was invading China
