No that does not bother me. I wonder if he would read and go by the Koran ? It would be interesting to find out more in regards to that subject. I wonder if it was a gift to him, or if he was a true Muslim ? You wonder why Christians were bothered by the fact that Thomas Jefferson owned a Koran ? Well I guess most of us thought the Holy Bible was the main book in America, but after study of some parts in the Koran, it might be similar to the Bible. People back in those days, did lots of reading. Any book they could get their hands on, they would read, read, read. So why would that bother anyone, that he owned the Koran ? I firmly believe you are more bothered by that fact then the Christians are. I am going to read the Koran too, as soon as I can. I would like to compare. I just hope it is in English. In America, we have the Freedom to read and own whatever we want. So I guess Thomas Jefferson owned the book. You opened a can of worms and I would like to know more History about that. Especially, if he was a Muslim. Good Point.

No.

Here is something you may not be considering. Back in that time there were just so many books, and a man like Thomas Jefferson or someone of his status and wealth could own practically 'everything' there was to own (in the way of books) - And a lot of these guys DID own 'everything' printed in their personal library . . . they also read them and thought deeply about the meanings of all that was 'known'. It sort of explains why those early 'Fathers" got it so right when they put this country together. It wasn't on a whim!

Thomas Jefferson was a highly-educated man who probably read more groups' scriptures than just the Koran. In fact, since he was such an intellectual giant, I would be even more surprised if I found out that he *hadn't* read the Koran.

It doesn't bother me in the least.

I didn't know he owned a koran, and it honestly makes no difference to me. A fundamentalist Christian could own a Koran. Or an atheist.
Jefferson did not believe in that God intervenes actively in the world. I would not call him a Christian. But he was a great statesman.
I happen to be a committed Christian writing this.

I don't know why it ought to. I'm a committed Christian, and I intend to try to get a Koran, so that I can read it for myself...

Well he was a Deist to begin with, but he seemed to me to be the kind of man who would enjoy reading up on other religions, so why not own one?

I didn't know this but my husband (not American) told me that before all Presidents had Qurans as well as other holy texts because it was their duty to learn about and understand other religions and cultures. Makes sense when you think about it.

No, it doesn't bother me at all. He may have just wanted to read it. Guess it doesn't matter now.
