I've heard in many places that you have to serve for at least 20 years to get the pension.

It's not a pension that you are referring too. It is a retirement pay. Normally you have to serve 20 years of active duty or have 20 years of active duty in the reserves (which could take you 40 years to do) in order to retired from the Military. There have been several times that the military was drawing down the forces and offered an early retirement package for people that had more than 15 years of active duty. You would lose some pay but no benefits for retiring early.
You can receive a disability compensation check from the Department of Veterans Affairs, if you received any injury while on active duty. This injury can be anything from ringing in the ears (tinnitis), to a loss of a limb, to genital warts. I was a VA rep for a few years and filed claims for vets. and yes genital warts is a disability with the VA.

All U.S. military personnel usually have to put in 20 years in order to receive a 50% pension (30 years for 75% pension). The only way you can get one earlier is under special circumstances (medical retirement for example, but you don't want that). Rarely they will have a special Reduction in Force (RIF) and may grant pensions to people with 15 to 19 years of service (at a reduced rate).
