... another woman there. I was so upset. I called a counselor on a hotline and told her what had happened. She nonchalantly said "Well, that's his right. It's his house." Why would a counselor say such a thing?

What type of hotline was it? If it was a suicide hotline, then she probably wasn't there to help you with romantic issues. More than likely she was a volunteer and studying to be a counselor and not a licensed counselor. It is one of the things that you have to do prior to getting your degree in psychology.
Sorry, but that wasn't the answer that you were looking for from a person that is supposed to show support. She should have thought that you may commit suicide because of this situation and should have talked to you more appropriately.
