Whenever my adorable kitty is looking out the window at birds she freaks out and starts cackling. Do you know what I am talking about? She opens her mouth like she is going to meow, but instead it is a voiceless noise that emits... What is this called?

I've heard it called "chattering", but I don't know what the official word for it is.

The cat is actually releasing pressure by chattering her jaws. After a cat sees a bird, there's all kinds of messages being loaded in their brain, like "bite down on the bird!". Her brain sends the signal to her jaw to bite down, but since she can't actually go after the bird, the messages telling her jaw to bite down just build and build, so eventually she has to chatter her jaw like that just to release the tension.

I have a cat that does that too! She loves watching the birds and even when she sees moving spots of light on the walls. We call it chattering because that's what she does, really. It's nothing to worry about. Your cat is just excited about the birds.

My male kitten does the same thing, both when he's looking at birds out the window and when we get him really involved in a toy. Supposedly, this is some sort of hunting noise that they make. It's nothing to be alarmed about. Sort of an "eh-eh-eh-eh-eh" noise.

I call it "The I wanna eat a birdie song"; My Ocicat does it everytime he sees birds. Then I feel rather guilty about not letting him outdoors so he can eat one,so I decide to cook some chicken for dinner and I share it with him. He is very spoiled!

I think Chatter is what it is generally called.

Know why they move their mouth like that? They're practicing the motions of biting prey.
