Over the counter remedies are the safest, especially for kids, using the enclosed comb for removing ALL eggs & nits + washing everything in hot water (clothes, bedding, towels, stuffed toys, etc) + spraying carpets, upholstery & curtains with over the counter spray designed for this & repeating these proceedures as indicated on the packages. Before over the counter remedies were available, washing the hair with deisel fuel worked but will burn the eyes & sometimes the scalp so it's not reccommended for kids, elderly or those with sensitive skin! And your hair came out shiney but didn't smell so good!LOL!

Use Olive oil. Soak the head with olive oil and put a Gladwrap bowl cover on the head. Make sure to get as much hair as you can inside the cover, use bobbi pins to keep the cover on. Leave on overnight then wash as usual. Repeat this every second day for at least a week, depending on how severe it is. The oil smothers the lice so they can't breathe. It will take care of any live ones that there are. I also have heard that putting vinegar on your hair makes it easier to get the nits out. Hope this helps!
